Often times in life we are not aware of the things or actions that are hindering us and we keep going oblivious to the “accursed things” in our lives blocking the promises of God. This is what happened to Joshua; he was confident that victory was theirs as the army advanced into the promise.
Joshua could not understand how the defeat at the hands of Ai was possible especially after the Jericho. God explained that the defeat was due to disobedience and that He could not deliver Israel’s enemies into their hands as long as the “accursed” things were in the camp.
As the story reveals Achan had taken the accursed things but God said to Joshua that the entire Israelite nation had sinned despite the fact that Achan had acted alone; this highlights the effects of the “Law of Spiritual Association.”
As God drew our attention to this story he revealed to us clearly that all relations, alignments and connections that we make have an impact on the manifestation of the promises that God have made to us. This is "The Law of Spiritual Association."
Throughout the Bible it is revealed that disobedience was at the root of the bondage or curses placed on the people of God and the same is true today. What is significant about the story of Achan is that the act of disobedience does not have to be a personal act. God reveals here that it is not only the sin, iniquity and transgressions of our generation/bloodline (natural family) that we need to address to ensure victory.
God revealed to us the following:
We call each other in the church our brothers and sisters in Christ and refer to the church as our “spiritual family.” We sign contracts as we accept employment and we become members of a particular work place or organisation. The term "colleague" which means partner, collaborator, co-worker, team member is applied to us and we assume the role. Some organisation even strive to create a “work family.”
We are apart of neighborhoods; schools and universities; teams; business/partnerships and we forge ties and bonds. The bottom line is that whatever the members of these organisations do whether public or in secret; whether good or bad all have a direct impact on us despite our personal efforts to live righteous. Meaning that if there is/are member/s in any of these organisations that are connected to or engaged in any form of perversion/sin "The Law of Spiritual Association" takes effect; that is why God did not say that “Achan had sinned but that the entire Israelite camp had sinned.”
God will not hold us accountable for the sins of others as he judges us but God is saying to us that we need to be mindful of the connections and soul ties that we make as we strive to maintain righteousness in Christ. 2 Corinthians 6:14 ESV "...... For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?"
